Bulgarka nature park

Bulgarka Nature Park lies at the heart of the Balkan Range and is the youngest of the total of 10 nature parks in Bulgaria. It was declared a protected territory in 2002, and occupies an area of almost 22,000 hectares. It covers mostly highlands along the upper reaches of the River Yantra. Forests stretch on 80% of the park's territory, with beech being the prevalent plant species in them.

"In creating the park we wanted to preserve the centuries-old beech eco-systems and the unmistakable scenery of the Central Balkan Range", explains Yulian Marinov, biodiversity expert at the Bulgarka Nature Park. "We were able to prove that apart from the recorded co-habitation of beech and cherry laurel found exclusively in the Balkan Range, and in neighboring Greece, the park offers other joint habitats such as beech and hophornbeam, as well as beech and heath-berry. Something that can be seen nowhere else in the world is the three-tier co-habitat of a 140 year old beech forest, and an under-wood of yew (a plant listed in the Red Book of Bulgaria), supported by a layer of cherry laurel. In the beech forest one comes across another species endemic to the Balkans - the sycamore maple. For the short time of existence of the park's Directorate we have discovered a natural bed of holly tree."

The biodiversity of Bulgarka Nature Park offers a wealth of endemites. "For the short period of work of the nature park we have established three local endemites, as well as many Bulgarian and Balkan one", Yulian Marinov went on to say. Biodiversity is particularly rich as far as the flora is concerned. The park is dotted with a great many plants featuring on the Red Book of Bulgaria. So far we have found 32 such species, but they will be hopefully more due to the large area of the park. The fauna is also diverse."

The forests and sub-alpine pastures provide the habitat of a great number of vertebrata and invertebrate alike. From among birds featured in the Red Book the following species have found refuge in the park: the Golden Eagle, the Lesser-spotted eagle, the Woodcock, the Stock dove, the Black woodpecker. The park is also the home of the Red deer, the Jackal, the Fox and the Wild boar.
